As one of London's most popular suburbs, Wimbledon boasts a wealth of green spaces, fantastic schools and local amenities, it is also know as the home of tennis and has been hosting the annual Wimbledon Tennis Championships since 1877. Oliver Rodbourne and Kirk Owen, the Sales and Lettings Managers at Foxtons Wimbledon, share their insight on this desirable area and its property market.

Tell us about the property market in Wimbledon...

Oliver: The Wimbledon Village is as sought-after as ever, with the development of new houses continuing to broaden the imagination of architects and developers alike. Any of the popular "Slopes" roads running from Ridgway to the town offer an eclectic mix of property.

Kirk: Wimbledon Park has also become a more desirable location, being relatively similar to the Village as an area, but with the benefit of more affordable prices.

And why is Wimbledon such a great place to live?

Oliver: Wimbledon has the perfect balance between town and country living with its close proximity to central London whilst being surrounded by greenery, village streets and grand family houses with large gardens.

Kirk: It is also the fact that its history and infrastructure add great diversity to the area, and of course the annual tennis tournament contributes greatly to Wimbledon's popularity.

Is it well connected?

Oliver: One of the District line branches starts in Wimbledon almost guaranteeing a seat for passengers, and the Overground train line into Waterloo via Clapham Junction means that the residents can access both the West End and the City in no time at all.

Kirk: The buses are also frequent to all South London postcodes whilst the A3 offers an easy way out of the capital.

What are the best places to eat in the area?

Oliver: The culinary mix in Wimbledon spans from local country style pubs on the Common to modern Thai restaurants on the high street, Thai Tho being my absolute favourite. There is also a new restaurant called Holy Smoke which opened very recently and already has been voted 4th best restaurant in London.

Kirk: San Lorenzo on Wimbledon Hill would be my top choice for a great Italian meal and the Brew Café does the best breakfasts in the area.

Where are the best spots in the area?

Oliver: The New Wimbledon Theatre has been attracting A-list Hollywood actors over the years, naturally drawing people in from across the city. There is also Cannizro House on the common, which is an incredible hotel with very high end food and beautiful conservatory onto the common

Kirk: Let'e(tm)s not forget the Wimbledon Tennis Tournament which attracts a global audience into the courts each year.

And for families?

Oliver: Wimbledon is blessed with some of the best primary schools in London. Bishop Gilpin was recently voted the 22nd best school in the whole country.

Kirk: There'e(tm)s also a Norwegian school and very good private schools such Wimbledon High and Kings College School.

Tell us something others wouldn't know...

Oliver: 54,250 tennis balls are used at the Wimbledon Championships every year and until 1986 they were actually white - they changed to yellow so that the umpires could see them more easily.

Kirk: According to law, golf may be played on Wimbledon Common - but only by individuals wearing a red outer garment.
