London's most stunning pools

Arguably the clearest indication of luxury, a swimming pool affords a deluxe addition to any household.

Although public swimming pools became popular in Britain in the mid-19th century, it wasn't until the 1950s that they started to be seen as luxury appendages to private residences, particularly for London properties. There is now a wealth of different designs, finishes and forms to enable you to pick the perfect pool for your particular property.

This beautifully restored Grade II listed six bedroom house was designed by the architect Charles Voysey and offers a fantastic example of how a swimming pool can be elegantly incorporated into the garden. Separated by a large patio area, it is tucked to one side to afford a sense of privacy with a tall hedge sheltering it from the view of neighbours. The extensive and well maintained lawn curves around the pool to evoke a natural feel to the man-made addition so that you could just as easily be lounging by the side of a spring, providing a pleasantly tranquil environment.

The opulence of this property doesn't stop there, with expansive and wonderfully presented interiors affording grand accommodation throughout. A classic air has been maintained with eye-catching original touches at every turn, including wood panelling, imposing fireplaces and bold black beams. Positively bursting with character, this house is certainly a unique and precious find!

This combination of the up-to-date addition of the swimming pool with the striking traditional interiors demonstrates how a pool is not just a feature for modern buildings, but can be integrated into any setting with a little consideration.

This impressive five bedroom house opts for a stronger impact (see above) rather than attempting to blend into its surroundings. Slightly raised from the rest of the garden with a neat hedge border and imposing stone steps, symmetry is also incorporated for a bold impression. This property is unapologetic of its opulence and utilises its surrounding to emphasise the grand swimming pool it has to offer.

Then in contrast, within a sought-after stucco-fronted development in Hyde Park, this luxurious one bedroom flat (below) offers a sleek comparison with a contemporary indoor swimming pool surrounded by crisp white walls and floors, and sharp contours that provide a strikingly chic outlook, almost futuristic in its appeal.

This wonderful four bedroom mews house (below) also benefits from an indoor swimming pool, but with a setting far removed from the previous example. Pillars and plant life present a classic feel, reminiscent of the original Roman baths. Beautiful lighting from beneath the water illuminates the room and creates an intimate and tranquil environment.
