In the heart of Balham lies Du Cane Court, an imposing residential block shrouded in intrigue.
Believed to be the largest privately owned development in Europe, the court was built in 1937 to an impressive Art Deco design.
The entrance is flanked with red brick pillars and the grounds showcase mature trees and beautiful Japanese gardens by celebrated landscape artist Kutsumoto. Shortly after the Second World War, rumours began to circulate that, had he ever invaded the UK, Hitler had planned to use the development as his headquarters. Further military links were later revealed as reports surfaced of enemy pilots using the building as a landmark to guide them home after bombing missions an admission which, quite literally, put this development on the map. In its fledgling years, the court's on-site services extended to two in-house radio stations, and a porter would interrupt broadcasts to announce the arrival of visitors. A large restaurant sated residents' social needs, hosting dinner dances and offering private club membership.
These facilities have since ceased to be, but the development now boasts an on-site grocery, 24-hour reception with porter, fantastic security measures and a keen residents' association, ensuring Du Cane Court continues to offer locals a truly luxurious living experience.
