Committed cricket fans will know that the first ever test match in England was played at The Oval in 1880.

Since then, the hallowed turf has hosted countless crushing defeats and memorable victories most notable perhaps being the biennial Ashes Trophy between England and their old antipodean foes, Australia.

Traditionally considered a gentleman's sport complete with afternoon tea some fittingly handsome properties can be found near the famous cricket ground and my manager's choice this month is a magnificent eight bedroomed house in Vassall Road. Few people know of the substantial family homes nestled amid the hubbub of south London but this one really is a hidden gem, its handsome exterior giving way to vast dimensions that make it perfect for entertaining.

Three reception rooms on the raised ground floor allow guests to drift from one room to another, lending the property a fluid feel, while the glass roof at the rear absorbs the warmth of the sunshine and a fireplace increases the cosiness in the winter. French doors lead out to the garden where a paved area full of foliage and a pond with koi carp provide a peaceful retreat from London life and a gate gives access to a small park perfect for impromptu cricket competitions. Although the house would be ample for most families there is a further self- contained flat on the lower ground floor, which was previously let for some extra income, but it could also be a retreat for teenagers or separate accommodation for elderly relatives or a nanny. Within easy reach of both Westminster and the fashionable environs of Borough and London Bridge, I have little doubt this house will appeal to politicians with a penchant for cricket or to media professionals with a strong social streak.

But one thing is certain: superb transport links, gated security, greenery galore and off- street parking suggest there will be plenty of competition for this splendid property. Foxtons.co.uk/1320500 This fantastic four bedroomed house close to Lordship Lane has a superb side return complementing the fabulous modern kitchen and enormous garden.

Unsurprisingly, it recently exchanged for an excellent price. After attracting multiple bids, this three bedroomed split-level property close to Ruskin Park was exchanged for a great price.

The flat has a delightful kitchen while the master bedroom is peacefully secluded on its own floor.
