Lovers of sport have had quite a year: football fans were wowed by Euro 2008; few could argue that this has been one of the most exciting Wimbledon's ever; cricket fans continue to be spellbound at Lord's; and Britain gave its best Olympic performance in a century.

The spirit of sport is alive and well in Ealing, where a host of our athletic heroes have chosen to put down roots over the years.

England cricketer Andrew Strauss is a resident here, while footballer Peter Crouch once attended Hanwell's Drayton Manor High School.

Champion athlete and double European gold medallist Lillian Board MBE also lived here and two streets in the borough are subsequently named in her honour, one in Greenford, the other near Acton Town Underground Station.

But perhaps the most famous sporting name to be associated with Ealing is Fred Perry, a man often deservedly described as England's greatest ever tennis player. Perry lived on Brunner Road in central Ealing and it's easy to see why he chose this spot. Wide, leafy and lined with large, beautiful homes, it ably demonstrates the very best of the borough.

The houses are full of charm, with extensive gardens and plenty of quirky character.

We recently introduced one such home to the market, a pretty three bedroomed cottage with a charming exterior and plenty of quirky features such as arched doorways, ornate fireplaces and original window latches.

Awash with natural light, the capacious rooms are ideal for a busy young family, while the extensive rear garden offers space for parental respite or childish horseplay if not a cheeky game of tennis.

Foxtons.co.uk/12244389 This two bedroomed period conversion flat on Elm Grove Road is set within a lovely detached freehold house just moments from Ealing Common and is currently under offer with us.

It was on the market at 375,000. This four bedroomed semi- detached house has been immaculately finished and has an enormous garden that backs onto Gunnersbury Park. The property, which is on Popes Lane in Ealing, recently sold through us at 685,000.
