Few property developers embark with such moralistic intentions as Dame Henrietta Barnett: cosmetics heiress turned social worker and godmother of the Hampstead Garden Suburb.

In the late 1800s, as a reaction to the dire living conditions she witnessed in her husband's parish, Barnett conceived an idyllic residential haven, where beautiful architecture and excellent living conditions were available to people from all incomes and classes. To ensure the beauty of this noble enclave, Barnett decreed, "no houses are to be built regardless of each other" nor "without consideration for picturesque appearance". She enlisted the architectural services of Raymond Unwin, who was at the time undertaking similar town-planning work on the first garden city in England, and together they set about creating one of London's most groundbreaking residential estates.

The development was planned in its entirety before one brick was laid to ensure aesthetic control, a number of by-laws were fought to achieve the perfect layout and a trust was established to ensure the social landscape of Hampstead Garden Suburb was suitably colourful. The area is still recognised as one of England's finest examples of domestic architecture and a peaceful haven hidden in the midst of a bustling city.

We are currently marketing a six bedroomed home here, whose interiors gleam with polished wood and marble floors and whose bathroom and kitchens are of exceptional quality after recent renovations.

But the best thing about this wonderful property is the large garden, which owes much to Dame Barnett as the vast green expanse provides the space and sense of the outdoors that she deemed vital for a happy home life.

Foxtons.co.uk/21005546 This one bedroomed flat on Thurlow Road recently let for the full asking price of 595 per week on a short term contract after just one viewing.

This was followed, after the second viewing, by a 12 month contract at the long term price of 345 per week.
