Ecclesiastical architecture is among some of the most breathtaking in England.

Churches, cathedrals and mosques provide many a landmark as soaring spires, magnificent domes and intricate stained glass add romance and a touch of reverence to a building.

This is particularly evident in east London's social landscape, where the symbols of the Christian faith have long since been joined by those of Islam, Hinduism and Judaism. The East London Synagogue in Stepney is one such imposing building.

Built in the 1870s by the Jewish architect Barrow Emmanuel, it was the first grand cathedral synagogue to be conceived in the East End.

As a result, the design is particularly impressive; a large structure of typical Victorian design, its robust lines, arched windows and gothic façade create a striking presence. The synagogue has, in recent years, been artfully converted into a series of apartments, fittingly entitled Temple Court. We are currently marketing a two bedroomed flat in this development that offers sleek design to match the building's charming exterior.

The reception room is arranged over two levels, offering attractive multi-purpose living space, while the lower floor provides ample room for relaxation. This is especially calming as French doors open onto the first garden, allowing residents to bring the outside indoors. Sweeping steps lead from here to the bedroom, which is light, airy and ideal for fans of open-plan living. The kitchen/dining room is equally bright. Laden with modern appliances and easily accommodating a table for ten, it too opens onto a second secluded garden, making this the perfect property to enjoy the last rays of summer. Foxtons.co.uk/2269720 This two bedroomed house that overlooks pretty Jesus Green recently let for 24 months at 550 per week. This one bedroomed loft-style apartment featuring exposed brick walls recently let for 425 per week for 12 months on a managed basis.
