Ecclesiastical architecture is among some of the most breathtaking in England.
Churches, cathedrals and mosques provide many a landmark as soaring spires, magnificent domes and intricate stained glass add romance and a touch of reverence to a building.
This is particularly evident in east London's social landscape, where the symbols of the Christian faith have long since been joined by those of Islam, Hinduism and Judaism. The East London Synagogue in Stepney is one such imposing building.
Built in the 1870s by the Jewish architect Barrow Emmanuel, it was the first grand cathedral synagogue to be conceived in the East End.
