You’ll probably find that you have limited storage space in your property if you live in a city, which is why it’s important to utilise the space you do have to maximise its potential. Today we talk through a few ideas that could help you create more much-needed storage in your city home, which are both stylish and practical.

Beds that can be raised

One of the best storage hacks for a small city home is a bed that raises up to reveal storage space underneath. Think of it like having an extra cupboard right under where you sleep.

Although you can put some things under a normal non-divan bed, a canopy bed has 100% contained usable space, so you can store things that you don’t need every day safely and cleanly – and there won’t be any unsightly boxes on show.

Top tip - If you have limited cupboard space in your city home, a great way to use what space you have is to separate your clothes into summer and winter items, packing away the clothes you don’t currently need under the bed until they are ready to wear next season.

It will require a bit of effort to organise initially, but you’ll probably find yourself wearing more of your clothes, as they will be easier to see once you’ve got more space in your wardrobe.

Rail-y good storage idea

Sometimes wardrobes can look bulky and take up much needed floor space in your bedroom. But a simple rail attached to alcove walls or on a freestanding rack can be a cheap and space-saving alternative.

Hang one or two rails further up the wall for storing clothes that you use less often and another in arms reach below this for things you use daily. There will also be additional room underneath for items such as shoes and bags.

If you don’t like the way your clothes look when they’re on show, a thin voile curtain attached to the ceiling will make the space look neater.

Utilise your box room

If you have a box room in your home but find it’s become a dumping ground for suitcases and other things that have no particular place, turn your attention into making it the perfect guest room.

While you probably don’t have the room for a double bed, with a bit of money a carpenter (or yourself if you’re a bit of a DIY expert) can build a single bed from wall to wall with cupboard space underneath and shelving flush to the wall at one end, creating additional storage and a cosy feel for guests.

Individual pieces of furniture can take up more room, but creating a bespoke all-in-one piece of furniture is a great way to utilise the space you have.

Partition your rooms

Partition walls may sound counter intuitive when you’ve got limited space in your city home, but they’re an easy way to create different usable zones that also give the impression of more space. You could construct a small walk-in wardrobe or en suite in your bedroom, or perhaps a dining area in your living room just by putting up a small partition.

The partition doesn’t have to be solid plasterboard or built into the room either. You could use bookshelves or cupboards, giving you extra storage space, or a simple blind attached to the ceiling that can be drawn across the room when you want to section off the space.

However, we wouldn’t recommend a solid partition wall that reaches up to the ceiling – keep it just above eye height and create a feature out of it by shaping the top. This will allow privacy while making sure the space doesn’t feel too small or closed off.
