The buzzing riverside district generating a new kind of energy

This historic crossroads and modern-day transport hub is being dramatically transformed as it builds on its industrial past to create a vibrant new riverside community. The Nine Elms development around Battersea Power Station is providing a welcome boost to the area, including a new Apple HQ and US Embassy. Meanwhile, Oval Village has created a thriving new residential area in and around the iconic Victorian Gasholders towering above Oval cricket ground. Thought to have been named after 13th century courtier Sir Falkes de Breauté, 'Falkes Hall' became 'Fox Hall', and eventually the 'Vauxhall' we know today.

Vauxhall area overview

"Vauxhall offers a wide variety of attractions to both buyers and tenants," explains Danielle Glance, Lettings Manager at Foxtons' Vauxhall office. "Currently enjoying significant regeneration, The Vauxhall, Nine Elms Battersea Opportunity Area is set to bring in 20,000 new homes and 25,000 new jobs.

"A new high street, centre and road system will make Vauxhall more attractive to pedestrians and cyclists, while the £1 billion Northern line extension into Battersea and Nine Elms will provide the infrastructure upgrade to match the improvements made above ground."

Green spaces

Vauxhall Park was opened in 1890 by Prince Albert and provides residents with open green spaces and facilities including cafe, tennis courts, outdoor chess tables and a lavender garden sponsored by the car manufacturer Vauxhall, named after the area it began in.

Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens is the other main public park in Vauxhall, and sits adjacent to the Vauxhall City Farm. This popular city farm is home to a variety of animals, including the usual cows, sheep and hens, plus alpacas, aviary birds and other more exotic species. The current Pleasure Gardens are located on the site of the former Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens – a renowned entertainment centre between the 17th and 19th centuries, attracting royalty and various luminaries with its highly varied programme of performances.

Schools and colleges

"Thomas's Battersea is probably the best-known school in the area, as it's currently attended by Prince George and Princess Charlotte," explains Isa Guerresi, Sales Manager at Foxtons' Vauxhall office. "However there are a lot of excellent schools and colleges in and around the area," she adds.

"Newton Prep in Battersea is a highly regarded private school for pupils from 3-13 years old, while Archbishop Tenison's C of E School is renowned for its strong academic results. The school enrolls students between the ages of 11-18 years."

Transport

Vauxhall is an outstanding location for transport options. The Vauxhall Cross bus terminus, with its distinctive cantilevered arms covered in solar panels, provides easy routes in all directions. The adjacent tube and overground stations give residents swift access to the Victoria Underground line and rail services on the Kingston and Hounslow Loop Lines, connecting with Richmond and Kingston in the west and Waterloo to the east.

On the river, St George Wharf Pier is a nearby stop for the London River Service, which runs every 40 minutes for a calm and largely disruption-free commute into The City and Canary Wharf. Looking to the future, a new Northern line extension will add Nine Elms and Battersea to further enhance transport options for residents and visitors.

Local highlights

New Covent Garden Market is named after its original home in Covent Garden, where it began in 1670. Now the biggest supplier of fresh fruit, vegetables, flowers and florist supplies in London, the market is a heady mixture of colours, scents and delicious flavours. You have to be up early to benefit, but this is the place to come for wholesale flowers and food, or just to get inspired for your next dinner party or interiors project.

Other visitor attractions in and around Vauxhall include the Imperial War Museum, the Newport Street Gallery – owned by Damien Hirst, and the wide variety of theatrical and culinary events taking place in the Battersea Power Station complex. The Mercato Metropolitano in Nine Elms also offers a variety of international street foods within a disused paper factory in the Borough Quarter, while the historic Beefeater gin factory offers guided tours and plenty of tasting opportunity.
