I love a weekend walk along Regent's Canal with a glass of rosé from Towpath.

The Camden Head

The Camden Head

A fantastic boozer in the heart of Camden Passage. Sit out in the beer garden watching the locals mooching around the market stalls.

An Islington institution, this Mediterranean restaurant is amazing value!

Camden Passage

Camden Passage

Vintage and antiques shops, Camden Passage oozes character and quirkiness with great places to have a coffee or dine. Oh so pretty and quaint!

Ottolenghi

Ottolenghi

Not great if you're on a budget. However, if you want to push the boat out and want tasty Turkish-inspired food, you're in luck!

The Canonbury Tavern

The Canonbury Tavern

A public house since the early 1700's, The Canonbury Tavern was refurbished in 2009 giving the residents of Islington one of the best pub gardens in the city and a superb roast lunch on a Sunday. Moreover, the beautiful garden offers an escape from chaotic city life.

69 Colebrooke Row

69 Colebrooke Row

One of London's best kept secrets. The size of a small living room, but serving the best experimental cocktails around. The bar uses spirits and drinks that it infuses itself in a drinks laboratory and the staff wear lab coats.

The Sampler

The Sampler

The best place to quaff on the finest wines around without having to buy a bottle! Very highbrow.

The De Beauvoir Deli Co.

The De Beauvoir Deli Co.

This is a fab little deli with homemade cakes, tonnes of local produce and some really great cheese! There's always people sat outside enjoying a sandwich and a coffee...

Frederick's

Great wine, superb food and awesome al fresco dining in their garden during the warmer months.

Newington Green Fruit and Vegetables

There isn't a vegetable or a piece of fruit that you cannot buy here. Amazing presentation and CHEAP!

Super tasty Vietnamese noodle salads and pho on the borders of Dalston.

The Free Association

The Free Association

A world class improv comedy theatre tucked away above De Beauvoir Arms pub on Southgate Road. Shows multiple nights a week featuring future and current TV and live comedy performers.

The Baring

The Baring

Long lazy Sundays or a swift ale after a busy day at work, The Baring is an ever popular watering hole that also has a serious Tuesday night quiz!

New Culture Revolution

New Culture Revolution

Off the beaten track. Amazing dim sum and very good value for money.

Why not explore the nearby areas of De Beauvoir Town, Canonbury, Hoxton, Newington Green, Dalston, Islington, Highbury, Caledonian Road, Shoreditch and Clerkenwell

"The first canned food was patented by a merchant in Hoxton called Peter Durand in 1810. Sadly the invention of the can opener was still fifty years away and they had to be opened by a hammer!"

Alongside all the restaurants and bars that make Upper Street so popular are the architectural gems that add character to the area.

Nick Batten

This inspiring mosaic in Angel reminds me every day to do what I love!

Daniel Burrell

Canonbury and Islington are renowned for their beautiful Regency architecture that attracts so many of the local residents.

What locals say about N1

  1. I love the vibrancy of Islington - the streets are full of restaurants from different cultures. There's also green space in central London. Plenty to see and do here. Plus of course there's Arsenal FC!

  2. Islington is a great balance of lively night-life and lovely places to chill out. It's a foodie's paradise with virtually every cuisine covered and a variety of settings from very formal to relaxed to cheap and cheerful. There's even great cinemas, theatre and music venues and unique and chain shops. The convenience factor's pretty good too with decent sized supermarkets, bus, tube and train transport and an easy (often walkable) commute to Central London

  3. The local council works hard to clean up and empty our bins

  4. Kings Cross is so well connected and, even by foot, you can get anywhere quickly. There are new things opening all the time and we're really near Shoreditch & Camden for great night life.

  5. North London has become one of my favourites places in London, mainly due to the many things there are to do, food, entertainment, socialising. I've made more friends living here that I have anywhere else, love that! I love that everything is within reach and a few minutes walk to exciting parts of east London, Shoreditch and hackney for instance. It has a quiet aspect considering its quite central, so if you love the city but value some peace swell, Islington is a five star for that! It's a lovely, friendly environment for children and families in general :)

  6. Fantastic restaurants and great transport links

  7. Caledonian Road is in every sense a hundred countries in a single street. From Vietnamese to Ethiopian, Indian to Polish, Italian to Caribbean, there is no end to the cafes, shops and restaurants in this mile long country hopping adventure. A true melting- meeting pot of cultures, it's what London prides itself in.

  8. Canonbury has lovely character, lots of established trees and well maintained houses and streets. Feels very safe and secure, and lots of cute pubs around that creates cosy and fun atmosphere. I'm here on a temporary visa and feel Canonbury definitely gives off the true London experience you come for. Also transport links are amazing, overground is so relaxing and chilled and Victoria line is brilliant.

  9. Fantastic area, great bars and restaurants for socialising, parks for jogging, and shops, it's like being in a village in London.
