Increasing the amount of natural light in a room can make all the difference to the atmosphere in a property, and with summer just around the corner, we’ve looked at how the properties on our books are set to make the most of the coming sunshine.

Skylights

Nelson Road, New Malden, KT3

With the increase in period conversions with single storey rear extensions, skylights on the ground floor have become an attractive option. The reception room of this four bedroom house in New Malden boasts two skylights that illuminate the space. White décor here also adds to the bright feel of the room, presenting a fresh, modern impression.

Mirrors

Uphill Road, Mill Hill, NW7

It has become well known that mirrors can create a fantastic sense of space when positioned to reflect the interiors, but they can also serve as a brilliant tool for brightening a room. This open-plan dining room belongs to a six bedroom house in Mill Hill and benefits from a long stretch of floor-to-ceiling mirrors opposite bi-folding doors, reflecting the abundant natural light back into the room.

Double-height windows

Townhouse Mews, Shepherd's Bush, W12

Expanding upon floor-to-ceiling windows, double-height windows can take the brightness in a property to a whole new level. A void section in the first storey of this four bedroom house in Shepherd’s Bush enables the windows to stretch across two levels, presenting ample natural light across both storeys. As shown in this particular property, having a double-height ceiling also enables the opportunity for further interesting features such as the bookcase pictured above, as well as large feature lighting.

Conservatory-style extension

Tredegar Square, Bow, E3

If skylights don’t provide quite enough light in your property, then why not go all out with a glass roof? Rear extensions designed in a conservatory style are perfect for making the most of the sunshine, as demonstrated in this four bedroom house in Bow. A large section of glazed ceiling encourages an airy feel throughout the entire room.

Glass walls/floors

Cheyne Place, Chelsea, SW3

You don’t always have to use glass on the exterior of a house to brighten the interiors. This seven bedroom house in Chelsea also opts for a conservatory-style area, but with the addition of a glass section in the floor that enables light to filter down to the storey below. This can also work with glass walls between rooms, spreading light to areas of the house that don’t have as much access to the sun.
