Warren McCann and Tania Smith, Sales and Lettings Managers at Foxtons Dulwich, reveal their insider tips on their area.
WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE PROPERTY MARKET IN DULWICH?Warren: Dulwich mainly attracts a combination of first time buyers looking for better value for money and families moving for the good schools in the area, such as Dulwich College, J.A.G.S and Alleyn's School. The extension of the East London Line into Peckham and Denmark Hill has also brought buyers from all over the capital to Dulwich and the surrounding areas.
Tania: On the lettings side, value for money is also a key factor and tenants are flocking to the area for the opportunity to rent and save which is easier than in many neighbourhoods north of the river. We are seeing more and more professional couples in their late thirties moving to Dulwich from areas such as Islington and Shoreditch, where they are currently paying considerably more for the same size flat that they could find here.
ANY EXCITING NEW OPENINGS?Tania: Having heard rumours of how good the pizzas are I'm looking forward to Franca Manca opening in East Dulwich.
Warren: There's also a new cinema coming to Lordship Lane in the St Thomas More Hall which looks set to be a trendy picture house and cafe.
WHERE CAN YOU RECOMMEND FOR SOMETHING DELICIOUS?Warren: Definitely Dulwich Tandoori - it's my favourite curry house with amazing food and friendly staff. I've been a regular since the office opened in 2007!
Tania: For breakfast, its got to be either Toasted on Lordship Lane for great coffee and the best toast and jam or Gail's in Dulwich Village for a breakfast meeting over smoked salmon and chive pancakes.
WHAT WOULD BE YOUR IDEAL WEEKEND?Tania: I'd spend the weekend having a massage at Dr Boo before investing in something vintage from Northcross market.
Warren: Dulwich Leisure Centre is a great place to unwind from a busy week, especially using the gym or swimming some laps in the pool. Lunch is then definitely in order, at either Mon P'tit Chou for a fresh baguette or delicious chili, or watching the football at The Actress pub in East Dulwich with a pizza.
WHAT DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR GETTING OUT AND ABOUT?Warren: For families with children, The Horniman Museum and Gardens is a great destination and there's even an Aquarium too. My wife and I love to check out the museum exhibitions from time to time. We're also spoilt for choice for green spaces. When the sun's out I like to grab a football and head to Peckham Rye.
Tania: I recommend heading for a long walk with a coffee in Dulwich Park, then admiring the art at the Dulwich Picture Gallery before indulging in a cupcake at Le Chandelier.
FINALLY, CAN YOU LET US IN ON ANY SECRETS?Tania: One of Dulwich's best kept secrets is that you get the most amazing view of the fireworks at New Year from the top of Canonbie Road. Grab a bottle of champagne and enjoy the show without all the extra crowds in central London.
