While this year we haven’t really seen much of the summer sun, London has plenty of rooftop bars and restaurants that are still well worth a visit – and some even have canopies and heaters!

From sophisticated 'get your glad rags on' central spots, to casual South London hangouts, we've listed our favourites.

  1. Frank’s Café
    Frank’s Café

Above the streets of Peckham on top of Peckham Multi Story car park, over the summer months Frank’s Café welcomes South East London’s revellers with open Peckhamite arms. It’s the perfect daytime and early evening rooftop hangout for Italian-style drinks and freshly prepared small plates.

  2. Notch

Behind an unassuming entrance on Oxford Street and after ascending a set of grey office block stairs, Notch’s rooftop position (which is partially covered by a canopy) is a great place to escape to once you’ve finished the day's shopping. Freshly prepared tapas-style dishes and unusual cocktails – with some served in tuna cans – mixed with views over the throng of busy shoppers below is a heady combination.

  3. The Bussey Rooftop Bar

On top of Peckham’s favourite late-night watering hole The Bussey Building, their rooftop bar is a more casual precursor to the impending night out. As well as Italian food from communal eatery Forza Win, you can catch recent box office hits and cult classics on their cinema nights.

  4. Radio bar
    Radio

With its panoramic views over the City and Covent Garden, Radio is perhaps London’s most well known rooftop bar. Situated on the 10th floor of 5-star hotel ME London, there’s a relaxed vibe throughout the day, while later on things get a bit livelier with a DJ.

  5. Pergola
    Pergola

While there’s only a few weeks left to enjoy Pergola on the Roof at the top of the old BBC Television Centre, make sure you take a visit before things pack up for the Autumn. Four restaurants and 2 bars under a retractable roof mean that come rain or shine, you can gather together with friends for a varied feast and a cocktail or two.

  6. Big Chill House
    Big Chill House

Just a short walk from King’s Cross, Big Chill House’s warehouse bar and restaurant is topped by an all-year-round roof terrace, which is perfect for after-work drinks in the sunshine. No bar in London would be complete without a converted shed serving food and drinks, and this rooftop bar has two!

  7. Soho Sky Terrace
    Soho Sky Terrace

Above Soho’s bustling streets, Soho Sky Terrace is a welcome retreat from the crowds. Once a courthouse and now part of Hilton Doubletree, there’s a relaxed atmosphere for evening drinks or even a private event, with space for up to 80 people.

  8. The Prince of Wales Brixton
    The Prince of Wales

Not one, but two tiers of roof terrace for dancing the night away. The Prince of Wales, or POW is one of Brixton’s biggest and most well known night spots, with a full line-up of DJs every weekend. Although the musical talent pulls in the crowds, the rooftop parties are a must in the summer months.

  9. The Broadway Fulham
    The Broadway

Members club, restaurant, pub and outdoor drinking spot, all in one. While there’s a suitable space for any occasion in this Fulham establishment, we’re drawn to the two rooftop terraces. Right next to Fulham Broadway Underground Station, The Broadway is great for post-work drinks in the sunshine or a get together with friends over the weekend before heading into town.

  10. The Boundary
    The Boundary

Not just a cool rooftop hangout, but a garden too! The Boundary’s rooftop restaurant serves food throughout the day and into the night, which can be enjoyed whilst taking in the panoramic views of East London. Delicious vodka and gin cocktails and a comprehensive wine list draw in those looking for a sophisticated setting for late-night drinks.

  11. Dalston Roof Park
    Dalston Roof Park

Although you will have to pay £3 for the privilege of treading Dalston Roof Park’s Astroturf, we think it’s worth it. Plants, vegetables and herbs grown in this pop-up rooftop garden are all used in the food and drink, while also adding to the bar’s charm. Views over Dalston show the changing city skyline, as yoga, street food stands and film screenings ensure there’s something for everyone.

And if you’re looking for a rooftop retreat of your own, then why not take a look at our favourite properties with private roof terraces.
