London declared UK’s "greenest" city

London has been named the “greenest” city in the UK, further bolstering its reputation as not only one of the world’s most attractive metropolises, but also one of the most progressive.

The result emerged from a piece of research carried out by Project Solar UK, which focused its attentions on four key categories:

• Nature

• Transport

• Emissions

• Sustainability

Within these categories a number of factors were considered, including the number of green spaces available per 10,000 people, the availability of electric vehicle charging points, levels of air pollution, investment in solar technologies, and the amount of household waste sent for reuse or recycling.

London scored highest in terms of its green space, investment in solar and also its range of electric vehicle charging points, and while it did not score particularly favourably with regard to air quality or recycling levels, it still managed to comfortably come ahead of Bristol and Manchester, which came second and third respectively.

A recurring theme

This is far from the first time that London has topped a list of cities that have put greenery and the environment at the fore. In 2020, a study by British Business Energy declared London to be the “greenest” city in Europe, while the same piece of research concluded that London is the world’s most eco-friendly city in which to work.

Additionally, a 2021 study by Nestpick named London as the most vegetarian-friendly city in the world, while a report released by Boston Consulting Group earlier this year found that London is the most desirable city in which to live and work.

If you need some extra convincing that London is a wonderful city in which to live, work and socialise, we recently compiled a list of eight studies that highlight the Capital’s greatness, which you can read here, or read our reasons on why to live in London.

The Capital’s “leafiest” boroughs

So green is the Capital that artist Helen Illus recently released the ‘London Greenground’ map, designed to inspire walkers and cyclists to explore London’s parks and public spaces.

However, if you are so enamoured with greenery that you want to live somewhere surrounded by trees and flowers, you will be delighted to know that a recent study has asserted the Capital’s leafiest boroughs.

According to data provided by OVO Energy, and utilising aerial imagery from surveying experts Bluesky, the study found that 14 boroughs are able to boast more tree cover than the London average of 20%. The top five leafiest boroughs are:

1. Barnet (27.1%)

2. Richmond upon Thames (27.04%)

3. Camden (26.16%)

4. Croydon (25.91%)

5. Bromley (25.73%)

A different study carried out by City Hall set out to discover how much of London is covered with trees, and found that one-fifth (20%) of the Capital is made up of what is referred to as ‘urban forest’. London is home to around 8 million trees, making it the third leafiest region in the entire country, coming in behind only Surrey (30.9%) and Exeter (20.45%).
