Walk and Talk combines group exercise with socialising to encourage older adults to become more active. Sessions are held online through Zoom, Monday to Thursday, and Saturday in groups of 7 to 10. Walk and talk in-person classes are held every Friday beginning at 10:30am, 1pm, and 2:30pm. The sessions are 90 min and include strength, balance, and bodyweight exercises followed by a group discussion on a health topic such as nutrition, stress, and sleep, and more holistic topics such as finding purpose in retirement, the importance of social connection, and gratitude.

This one-day session introduces you to a range of wood-working tools and equipment, which you can then use to make your own kitchen chopping board. The first part of the day serves as an introduction to the Machine Shop workshop, providing guidance on the safe use of workshop machinery, such as the chopsaw, bandsaw, pillar drill, disc and bobbin sander. Following a talk on different types and uses of hardwood, you’ll then be able to select your material from our onsite timber store and design your very own chopping board. With support and guidance from the tutor, you’ll then use our workshop equipment to make your object - providing you with a beautiful, personalised project to take home with you! As a great bonus, this course includes our workshop Level 1 Induction, meaning that you will automatically be able to book a workbench and use Blackhorse Workshop in the future.

Skills You'll Learn Spindle turning, Faceplate turning About the Course An in-depth two days of woodturning. At the end of this course, even without any previous experience, you will get to take home a beautiful assortment of finished hardwood objects. Day 1 You will learn the structure and safe use of the lathes with a variety of turning tools. You will practice control by spindle turning with a freestyle exercise followed by a more traditional, technical object to turn. Day 2 You will learn about materials, how to prepare and mount them, how to realise your own designs and apply finishes, and turning hardwood bowls through faceplate turning. The weekend affords you time to go at your own pace whilst being introduced to the joys of woodturning. You will be fully inducted into our wood lathes and gain the confidence to take on your own future projects. Looking for a fun family activity for you and the children? These family making sessions are suitable for beginners and are open to parents and guardians with a child 7+ years old. These classes are ideal for children interested in making. Project: Foot Stool Tools: handsaw, coping saw, hand-held drill Involving learning about lap joints as a joinery technique you will make your very own foot stool to take home with you. Inspired by a milking stool you will cut and join the legs followed by attaching the seat. Skills You'll Learn Introduction to Metalworking Techniques covers an induction in metal work, materials, PPE, gas, electric and sundries. After completing this one-weekend course, you will have completed our metalwork induction and will automatically be able to book our metal workshop. Day One: Introduction to Metalwork Area - Health and safety briefing, Explain marking out and cutting materials - Marking out using measuring tapes, squares, vernier callipers, scribes, pens and chalk - The use of the hack saw, pipe cutter, chop saw, angle grinder, guillotine - Drilling using pillar drill and hand drill - Folding, rolling and forming - Participants will cut lengths to roll on the progressive rollers, pipe benders, sheet folder and roller - Folding thicker material by scoring using an angle grinder. Folding thin sheet material by scoring Day Two: Welding - MiG and TiG - Health and Safety introduction to welding, correct PPE, use, setup and close down procedures - Demo in MIG followed by practice - Demo in TIG followed by practice - Hot Works - Health and Safety introduction to gas bottles, correct PPE, use, setup and close-down procedures - Demo of hot works forming using the anvil, vice and hammer.
