J S Bach's brilliant Magnificat - the Song of Mary - is paired with Alec Roth's celebration of times and seasons for the same forces. Roth's carefully selected texts, draw from a very wide variety of sources. He starts with the well-known passage from Ecclesiastes and continues with, amongst many others, poetry from Ovid, Blake, Herrick, Donne, Aphra Behn, and Edward Thomas, all bound into a single musical narrative divided into four sections - Spring Morning; Summer Noon; Autumn Evening; and Winter Night. The work is capped with Proper Exercise, a celebratory after-dance or 'jig' in the Shakespearean tradition, setting words by the bard's contemporary, John Davies. We will be accompanied by the period instruments of Affinity Chamber Orchestra.
