The Mozartists: Ronald Brautigam Plays Mozart
Celebrated Dutch fortepianist Ronald Brautigam makes his eagerly awaited debut with Ian Page’s award-winning orchestra The Mozartists, performing two of Mozart’s delightful early piano concertos. The programme also includes Mozart’s popular Serenata notturna, scored for the unusual combination of strings and timpani, and the joyfully effervescent Divertimento in D major, K.251, allegedly composed as a 25th birthday present for Mozart’s sister. Ronald Brautigam is one of very few pianists to perform at the highest level on both modern and period instruments. A student of the legendary Rudolf Serkin, he has recorded all of Mozart’s concertos and sonatas, as well as those by Haydn and Beethoven. “What is consistently compelling about these performances is the way Brautigam and his instrument allow us to look under the bonnet of the music.” Gramophone 6.15pm: Pre-concert talk Conductor Ian Page discusses the evening’s repertoire (in the auditorium, free to ticket holders)Read more
Odyssey Festival Orchestra: Mahler & Sibelius
In 1907, two of the greatest symphonic composers, Gustav Mahler and Jean Sibelius met in Helsinki, where the former was guest conducting. There, they went on a walk together and discussed the future of the symphony. Both men were lovers of nature and believed that the natural world would be a key reference point. After that, however, their views could not have been more starkly contrasting. Mahler thought the symphony should expand to “contain the world”, while Sibelius favoured rigorous logic and compression. In tonight’s programme, London’s bold new orchestra of pre-professional musicians under the baton of its Artistic Director explores this great debate through two symphonies that highlight the composers’ contrasting philosophies. Afterwards, the audience will be invited to vote on which approach most appeals to them.Read more
About Sloane Square
Sloane Square is a small hard-landscaped square on the boundaries of the fashionable London districts of Knightsbridge, Belgravia and Chelsea, located 2.1 miles (3.4 km) southwest of Charing Cross, in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. The square lies at the east end of the trendy Kings Road and at the south end of the more conventionally smart Sloane Street linking to Knightsbridge. In the early 1980s, it lent its name to the "Sloane Rangers", the young, ostentatiously well-off members of the upper classes. The Square has two notable buildings: Peter Jones department store and the Royal Court Theatre.
