Sofia Gubaidulina Chaconne (1962)
BrahmsVariations on a Theme by Handel, Op. 24
Praised by the Chicago Tribune for her ‘convincing bravura’ and named ‘Performing Artist of the Year’ by the South China Morning Post, Sherri Lun has established herself as a rising soloist on the international stage. For her Kings Place recital debut, she presents ‘Metamorphosis’, a programme built around five sets of variations spanning three centuries.
Variations are often thought of as merely displays of technical brilliance, but these works show how much more there is to discover in the form. Sherri Lun’s Metamorphosis programme was chosen for the way it reveals the creative process, as themes become laboratories of ideas - tested, stretched, fragmented, and illuminated with new colours as they evolve. The grandeur of Bach’s Chaconne re-imagined by Busoni stands alongside Mendelssohn’s inward intensity and Busoni’s virtuosic homage to Chopin.
Gubaidulina’s Chaconne pushes the boundaries of expression, before the journey ends with Brahms’s monumental Handel Variations. Together, these pieces show how simple musical seeds can grow, through true metamorphosis, into a whole world of imagination.
