Mario Bakuna on acoustic guitar and vocals
In this intimate solo concert for acoustic guitar and voice, Mario Bakuna invites the audience into the heart of the Brazilian guitar tradition a language shaped by rhythm, subtlety, and deep emotional resonance. Drawing inspiration from masters such as João Gilberto and Baden Powell, Bakuna explores the unique role of the guitar in Brazilian music: at once harmonic, rhythmic, and profoundly expressive. João Gilbertos plucked-chord bossa nova style, with its delicate syncopation and understated elegance, meets Baden Powells virtuosic fusion of samba, Afro-Brazilian rhythms, and jazz sophistication, creating a rich tapestry of influences that have shaped Bakunas musical identity.

With expressive vocals and his signature acoustic guitar, Bakuna reimagines classic repertoire and presents new works infused with warmth, refined swing, nuanced phrasing, an unmistakable sense of groove, and a modern sensibility.

Mario Bakuna, a sparkling guitarist, plays with palpable feeling - his virtuosic fluency on the fretboard is controlled and flourishes are perfectly placed. His voice has a texture like heavy cloth. (Songlines Magazine)
Mario Bakuna, a man who exudes music. () vocals doesnt begin to do him justice: his expressive range and the precision with which he was able to deploy it was truly the bands fifth instrument. () And he did this while playing guitar with precision and finesse. () his solos were a further source of amazement, his technique somewhere between finger-picking style and classical. His solo introduction to a Baden Powell number made a hash of any attempt at a definition. (The Whitman Review, Wakefield Jazz)
