Beginning in Cornwall, the performance opens with Smyth's Overture to The Wreckers, which portrays the plundering of ships by 19th-century Cornish villagers. Following this, soloist Esther Yoo joins the orchestra in Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 2, a work that balances lyrical grace with rhythmic vitality, showcasing the composer's distinctive melodic voice. For the final work of the programme, hear the Albion Orchestra perform Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade with narrations by Theia Charles and John Fleming. A monumental setting of One Thousand and One Nights, Scheherazade tells the story of Sultan Shahryar abandoning his murderous ways, captivated by his bride's stories.
