A short walk will take you to Old Street tube or numerous bus routes will take you into the City, West End or up to Dalston and beyond. The benefit of the canal affords you cycle access to Angel, London Fields or Victoria Park in a number of minutes whilst Shoreditch is a short walk away through the park. Gainsborough was first a power station for the Great Northern & City Railway; it was later converted into a film Studio where it produced a number of melodramas in the 1940's. After the departure Michael Balcon, founder of Gaumont British to MGM-British it began making more popular films such as Oh, Mr Porter! (1937) and Hitchcock's The Lady Vanishes (1938). The former studios were demolished in 2002 and flats, designed by architects Munkenbeck and Marshall, were built on the site in 2004. A large sculpture of Hitchcocks head was erected in memory of the late director which resides in the courtyard of the development, serving as a reminder of his earlier work there.
