New developments are constantly evolving to keep up with the latest architectural trends. But what about the responsibilities of a developer in the area they are moving into? Park SW20 is a prime example of how a project can be carried out with consideration for the local area and its residents.
We speak to Mike McCarthy of Equitas Properties who brought this project to life.
Making it Clean and Green
The site of Park SW20 was just an empty advertising board site prior to the development works taking place. Equitas Properties saw an opportunity to create housing that would fit into the family feel of the area, whilst being beneficial to both the immediate surroundings and the local environment as a whole.
“We were determined for the architecture to change the whole look of the corner and that is what we hope we’ve achieved,” Mike McCarthy reveals. And we certainly think it is the case.
Park SW20 comprises nine crescent shaped houses that all adhere to the Code for Sustainable Homes. Each property includes solar panels and high efficiency underfloor heating to prevent energy wastage. The development also has access to an electric car charging bay, encouraging its residents to help the environment further in their day-to-day lives.
"Sustainability is an important part of modern living, as well as having a sense of responsibility for the environment. So we made sure that this development has no negative impact on the environment.”
Keeping it Local
When it came to presenting the homes to the public, it was difficult to think of anyone better than the interior designers based right round the corner.
Two Sisters Home was founded by sisters Natasha Sharpe and Jane Duffy-Lynch in 2011 and is based in Wimbledon Village. One of the sisters, Jane in this instance, created fresh contemporary décor for the show homes, following a Scandinavian inspiration. This led to using natural materials and pastel tones that complement the design of the house.
“Because of their local customer base we knew that they would understand what works best for the local residents and those attracted to the area. We didn’t want to go with a usual hotel feel, we wanted to appeal to the unique local market and Two Sisters did that perfectly.”
The aim of attracting buyers locally and from neighbouring areas was especially important to Equitas Properties. “Instead of designing a block of flats, we decided to purposely design houses to appeal to the local market, as we felt there were very few houses being built and this is a unique development that is perfect for the area.”
Embracing a sense of community
With the aim of creating a development that integrates into the community and also helps it to flourish, the developers utilised the expertise of the successful garden architect Diamuid Gavin to provide a communal garden for the project, with the crescent layout of the development facing in towards the greenery.
“The primary role of the communal garden is to create a stylish green gathering haven, a small park or retreat for those who wish to relax alone, play with the kids or gather with neighbours and friends,” explains Diamuid.
This aspect of the space was crucial considering the neighbourhood that the development and gardens were being built in.
“The development is taking place within a settled, mature neighbourhood and the confident and considered approach taken will enhance the surrounding area. I hope the gardens will add to the overall new ambiance.”
Equitas Properties, and especially Mike, were delighted with the result. “Diamuid Gavin is the most creative person I’ve ever met. His detailed design was impeccable. The minute I showed him the site, his enthusiasm was intoxicating.” enthused Mike.
