Valentines Concert by Candlelight
Join us for an early evening of romantic music by candlelight, set at tables arranged in couples or groups.
The programme will include music by Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Gaubert, Schumann and Mozart from the very popular performers Debbie Davis (Flute), Mary Mundy (Cello), David Syrus (Piano) and John Payne (Clarinet).
Doors open at 5pm with a drink on arrival included in the 15 ticket price.
Guests will then be asked to take a seat ready for the performance to begin at 5.30pm
"Small plates" of Italian antipasti will be served to the tables (for those who have chosen that option on the ticket booking).
There will be a 15 minute interval and short pauses between each piece to allow for orders to be taken at tables from our licensed bar
In total, there will be 1 hour and 15 minutes worth of music with the performance finishing at around 7.15pm (taking into account the interval and short pauses).

Your Musicians
Debbie Davis studied flute at the Royal College of Music at both the Junior and Senior Departments with Graham Mayer and Edward Walker. Her first professional appointment was with the DOyly Carte Opera Company after which she pursued a successful freelance career playing with many orchestras throughout the country. From 1988 until her retirement in 2025 she held the post of sub principal flute and piccolo in the City of London Sinfonia where she was also actively involved in their many education projects. Teaching positions have included Colchester Institute and Junior Guildhall School of Music and Drama and she has taught at Surrey University since 2022. Debbie qualified as an Alexander Technique teacher in 2015 which she also teaches at Surrey University, helping students not only with postural or breathing problems related to playing or singing, but also to alleviate performance anxiety
John Payne was awarded a scholarship to the Royal College of Music, where he won the Thurston Clarinet Prize in his second year. He spent two years in the BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra and in 1979 he joined the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House as second doubling E flat clarinet. From 1993 to 2018 he was one of the orchestras two principal clarinets. During his long career he played for many great conductors including Haitink, Kleiber, Solti, Abbado, Rattle, Colin Davis and Pappano. As principal clarinet he can be heard playing the solos on many opera and ballet CDs and DVDs such as Tosca, Meistersinger, Tristan and Isolde, Rosenkavalier, Sleeping Beauty, Coppelia etc. He was a founder member of the Soloists of the ROH Orchestra and also appeared as soloist with the orchestra in Mozarts Clarinet Concerto and Aaron Coplands Concerto for the ballet Acherons Dream.
Mary Mundy was for many years sub-principal cellist with the Orchestra of The Royal Opera House. Her focus has always been chamber music and she has performed many times in the ROH Chamber Music Series as well as giving recitals in the London area and in France, Germany and Italy. She was a prize winning student at the Royal College of Music and scholarship awards enabled her to continue her studies in Vienna with the great French cellist Andre Navarra. On her return to London she gave a critically acclaimed recital at the Wigmore Hall.
David Syrus joined the Royal Opera as a repetiteur in 1971. He was Head of Music from 1993 until his retirement in 2017, and conducted a wide range of repertory in the theatre, including Carmen, La Traviata, Salome, Elektra, Der fliegende Hollnder and dozens of performances of Mozart operas. Abroad he conducted Britten in France, Rossini in Japan, Weill and Stravinsky in South America and aria concerts in many European cities. He was for many years on the staff of the Bayreuth and Salzburg Festivals.
