Smart Home technology: connected living

It comes as no surprise that technology companies have reacted to consumer demand for smart home products that help make our increasingly busy lifestyles more efficient.

Imagine that you’ve not even stepped through your front door, but you’ve already switched on the oven, finally got round to putting on a load of washing and stocked up on groceries – having quickly checked the contents of your fridge from your desk at lunchtime.

And it’s all thanks to smart home technology and the Internet of Things (IoT) network; the interconnectivity of physical objects and technology, helping make everyday tasks more accurate, efficient and cost-effective.

John Lewis's smarthome technology department is the largest of its kind in the country. It brings together products of the future that are set to revolutionise the way we control and monitor our homes using apps and the internet.

According to John Lewis, "The move comes in response to an 81 per cent increase in sales of smart home products in the past year".

Showcasing devices such as Nest’s smartphone controlled thermostat, Philips Hue Wi-Fi controlled lighting, wireless entertainment systems like Sonos and the real jewel in the crown, Samsung’s Family Hub Refrigerator – complete with cameras to monitor what food you have, a family entertainment system and a huge touch screen with organisers, calendars and instant messaging – it’s a one stop shop for everything smart.

John Vary, Innovation Manager at John Lewis, comments “Smart home technology is designed to make life more convenient, and the introduction of this new curated experience – the first on the high street – marks a brilliant step in innovation for John Lewis. Showcasing the latest smart products, this experience demonstrates in a real-life setting how technology has exciting and far-reaching implications for today’s lifestyles.”

Not only do many of these gadgets save the planet with their revolutionary energy saving functionality, but they’ll also save you time and energy too at the touch of a smartphone button.
