This three hundred-year-old Stepney house is home to one of the world's most unique hotels, 40 Winks. Described by Grazia magazine as "London's sexiest boutique hotel", the opulent three bedroom abode has received thousands of pages of press since it opened in 2009. It is the brainchild of renowned interior designer and avant-garde hotelier, David Carter.

40 Winks describes itself as a ‘micro boutique hotel’, but the house has also been one of London’s most successful photographic locations, hosting hundreds of high-profile fashion and celebrity shoots, as well as its own programme of acclaimed events like its famous literary pyjama parties. "It's like a piece of living theatre, exuding wit, charm and glamour... a sumptuously decorated homage to fin-de-siecle frivolity", is how The Saturday Times Magazine put it.

This property should appeal to those simply looking for a fabulous family home, as well as those who want a property that can generate an income either by continuing its hotel business or by hosting photoshoots and events.

The south-facing four-storey Georgian townhouse was built in 1717 by John Ireland and is one of the oldest privately owned homes in London. Period details include wooden box cornicing, elegant panelling, parquetry timber flooring, eight open fireplaces and large sash windows. The property was completely restored just over 20 years ago and finished to the highest standards, using some of the country’s top decorative artists and craftsmen.

Located on Mile End Road between Stepney Green and Whitechapel tube stations, the property sits within easy reach of Spitalfields Market and all the creative buzz of Brick Lane, Shoreditch and the rest of East London. The District and Hammersmith & City lines run through Stepney Green station, while the Overground can be accessed at Whitechapel. This runs north through Hackney and south to Canada Water, providing swift connections to the Jubilee line.

The rooms are beautifully proportioned and filled with light. There are working shutters throughout the property, as well as a host of other sensitively restored architectural features.

The family bathroom on the second floor features striking bespoke dark wood cabinetry. The hand painted gold leaf wallpaper is by de Gournay. The marble sink and freestanding aluminium bathtub with brass lion's head spout also add to the drama of this sumptuous room.

The top floor master bedroom is flooded with light from the three south-facing windows to the front of the property. A secluded courtyard garden to the rear features woven willow hurdle fencing and many mature shrubs and trees that frame a seating area of blue slate chippings. The property also benefits from its own parking space.

This property is currently listed for sale for £2 million. Please see our main listing page or contact our Shoreditch office for more information or to arrange a viewing.
