These homes aren't what they seem…

First appearances can often be deceiving. What you find behind the front doors of these properties is not what you’d expect. From eccentric artworks, to ultra-contemporary design features, these homes aren't what they may initially seem – and one of them once belonged to Sex Pistols frontman, Johnny Rotten.

Lively interiors in Lancaster Gate

From the outside, this three bedroom apartment is typical of many properties in the Lancaster Gate area – white stucco fronted, with elegant Georgian architectural features. However, inside, the décor is very different to what you would usually expect to see in a property like this.

Exposed brick walls, industrial-style beams and ultra-modern fixtures and fittings are a far cry from its original period design and the current owner's striking art collection certainly makes this home stand out from the crowd.

In the reception room, the open-plan layout gives this property a loft-style vibe and quirky features such a see-through shower in the master bedroom and glass floors add to the eccentric aesthetic.

Not many homes like this in Notting Hill

While still elegant from the outside, you'd be forgiven for walking past this property and thinking it's probably four or five converted flats inside an old town house – like most of the other homes in this area of Notting Hill.

However, this beautiful four bedroom freehold house actually comprises the whole building – which is rare in this part of London – and is laid out across six storeys.

Inside, it has been renovated from top to bottom, with a cool contemporary finish in the en suite bedrooms and sleek white and grey kitchen. In contrast, no less than three reception rooms are adorned with period features that complement its original build style.

I bet you weren't expecting this...

This impressive property in Knightsbridge has a charming period façade that wouldn't look out of place in a cute rural chocolate box town.

But behind the front door, the design is far from what the exterior would suggest.

The current owners of this £3.75m house have combined white walls, quirky contemporary furniture and modern fixtures and fittings to create a chic minimalist aesthetic. While the outside screams quaint and traditional, inside there's little indication that this home was built more than 10 years ago, never mind over 100 years.

And this property is not short of luxurious features either, including Lutron lighting, an integrated Sonos system and a state-of-the-art Gaggenau kitchen.

Period property with a punk rock edge

Not unlike the neighbouring homes, the exterior of this maisonette is typical for Chelsea, with tall windows and stucco plaster reaching halfway up the building. But inside, a bold monochrome aesthetic tells a different story.

Once home to Sex Pistols frontman, Johnny Rotten, it comes as no surprise that this three bedroom home's interiors rebel against its traditional architectural style.

A large built-in fish tank and mirrored walls in the eye-catching reception room are just some of this property's unconventional features. But perhaps most unusual is the 400 sq ft. roof terrace, which is the only one of this size in the area – rock and roll.
